developed. Its numerous sandy beaches scattered around the entire
territory of the island, make it an ideal holiday island for nature lovers as
well as families who seek a quiet and beautiful place for their vacation.
Approaching the island by boat, the visitor will see two small islands to the
left and right of the harbour, one with the little church
of Myrtidiotissa, and the other called
Palatia which is linked to Naxos
Town. The imposing gate, Portaraas it is known by
the local people, rises in splendid isolation above the town, the last relic of
the ancient marble temple dedicated to Apollo which the Naxian tyrant Ligdamis
ordered to be built in the god's honour in the 6th century B.C. For two and a
half centuries now it has stood looking out towards the sacred island of Delos. Archaeologists believe that the
building of the temple was never completed because work on it had to stop when
war broke out between Naxos and Samos, and
thereafter it remained unfinished. Free time to explore the Island

Day 07
/Saturday Naxos – Mykonos Departure

MykonosIsland is world famous. It is no coincidence that
this, the most cosmopolitan of all Greek islands, attracts so many visitors
from the entire globe, including large numbers of artists and
intellectuals. Here the steep mountains to be encountered in most of the Cyclades islands give way to low, rocky hills which
combine with superb beaches to make up the landscape of the island. The capital
Hora, with its colourful harbour in which little fishing boats nest happily
side by side with luxury yachts, presents quite a different picture from that
of the majority of Aegean island towns. While it is usual for island villages to be
built on naturally amphitheatrically sites, Mykonos
is spread out over a flat area and conveys an impression of solid aesthetic
cohesion. Along the whitewashed streets stand brilliant white cubic houses with
stepped walls for sitting on wooden doors and windows and brightly coloured
balconies Time at Leisure in the afternoon to explore the island and the

Sounio –Piraeus Departure from Kea at approx. 05:00 and sail to
Piraeus. Stop at Sounion. Arrival at Piraeus
at approx. 16.00 The sanctuary at Sounion is one of the most important
sanctuaries in Attica. Sporadic finds point to
the conclusion that the site
was
inhabited in the prehistoric period but there is no evidence of religious
practice in
such an
early date. “Sounion Hiron” (sanctuary of Sounion ) is first mentioned in the
Odyssey
as the place where Menelaos stopped during his return from Troy to burn his
helmsman.
The finds
of the 7th century B.C. are numerous and prove the existence of organized cult
on two points of the promontory: at the southern edge where the temple of
Poseidon is situated and about 500
m. to the northeast of the temple, where the sanctuary
of Athena was established.
